askkrenko asked:

"Hey it's... some... guy. On Mirrodin. How are things going? Any luck in killing Elesh Norn? She's really inconvenient."

Elesh Norn is beyond my reach at the time, in terms of both physical presence and power, but believe me when I say that her monstrous rule shall be ended by my sword.

“Well, we had a setup to get us into the Furnace Layer directly, but that artifact’s gone. We’d need a new beacon. The Red Sun works, if you can give us a time when it’s directly overhead a safe location. Pretty much anywhere on the surface is fair game. Finding a beacon two layers down would be… a lot harder. Unless you guys know where Koth is. He could do it no sweat.”

“Nowhere on the surface is safe. Well, unless a few places like the settlement in the Tangle, but even those places are risky. Your best bet would be one of the tunnels that intersect with the Red Lacuna, in the Oxidda Chain. The Lacuna itself is heavily patrolled, but if you manage to sneak in, you could enter one of the side tunnels and one of ours could guide you to our camp on the Furnace Layer from there. As for Koth… well, he’s been missing for a while. We haven’t lost hope yet, but we’re no longer searching for him.”

“Uh huh… Uh huh…” Krenko takes notes. “What I need is someone stealthy, capable… Able to send up a beacon of red mana… Hmm… Ooh, if Koth can’t be found, I wonder if I can get Chandra to scout. Or maybe that Rade kid.”

“Chandra? She’s nothing but trouble.” Jor stopped, thinking carefully about the issue. “I could be able to do it myself. I’m not sure how to project the beacon, but I could make a pretty large fire. Besides, you won’t find anyone willing to take that risk other than me.”

“Well, sooner rather than later would be good for me. You need to buy anything to help your cause, you just say so… No livestock, though.”

“I thank you for your helpfulness. I trust you’re an honourable man. But we do not need any supplies at the moment, none other than time, which I doubt you would be able to procure.”

“You trust whatnow? Err, that is, just hit me up if you think of anything! But I don’t suppose you know any good ways to get through the furnace? I need to see if the Secret Warren’s still around after Elesh Norn did, well, Elesh Norn things.”

“Our settlement is on the Furnace Layer. Getting here might be difficult unless you know all the tunnels that lead to the surface. You would need a guide. Someone who would actually take the risk of going into the open. I don’t know where you’re coming from, but there would potentially be a long journey across Phyrexian wasteland, and trust me, not many people would risk their lives like that.”

Phoenix

It felt like a sunrise.

Of course, Jor would later scoff at the thought of it. The suns didn’t rise and set on Mirrodin. They simply were. And yet, there was something oddly fresh about the rays that fell on his face as he felt his consciousness return. He opened his eyes and was blinded by that same light. It hurt, but the pain was a good one. A pure and gentle one. He took a deep breath, smelling the air as if for the first time. It smelled like home, yet, somehow new.

There was something he couldn’t remember.

Jor blinked a few times, his eyes gradually getting used to the light. He had been in the darkness for a long time, longer than he dared to think about. Longer than he could allow himself to think about. He felt it now, completely. It was everywhere. That strange, unmistakable feeling that something, somewhere, was horribly wrong. And he also knew that he couldn’t think about it. The moment he remembered what was wrong, it would all fall apart. He tried not to remember. He didn’t move. He felt the world and tried to stop feeling his own body.

There was no pain.

Slowly, the realisation crept up on him. What he didn’t want to remember was the only thing left on his mind and he didn’t notice before it was too late. There was no pain. None at all. No pain from the stab wound that he was certain had been there before he blacked out. He remembered Elspeth, her face, her sword, then only an eternity of darkness and pain. And now, he was here. Safe. Unharmed.

He was alive.

Jor tried not to panic. Him being alive was terrifying. It wasn’t natural. It shouldn’t be real, and yet it was. He stumbled to his feet, bursts of dull, gentle pain shooting through his body as he moved. He was alone, in the middle of the Glimmervoid. He was clothed. Not far away was a sword that he would have recognised anywhere. His own sword. Jor told himself to breathe slowly. He picked up the sword. It felt just like before. He felt just like before. Mirrodin felt just like before. No Phyrexians, no war, no unnecessary death. It felt pure.
